Welcome to the Betrayal at House on the Hill (3rd Edition) page! This guide covers the rules, setup, and how to play using Tabletop Simulator (TTS).
Betrayal at House on the Hill (3rd Edition) is a semi-cooperative horror board game where players explore a haunted mansion, uncover spooky events, and collect items—until one player betrays the group and the game shifts into a 1-vs-all battle.
This edition includes:
- 🏚️ 50 new haunts with an improved narrative system.
- 🔄 Revised mechanics for smoother gameplay.
- 🎭 Rebalanced items, omens, and room effects.
🔢 Players: 3-6
⏳ Playtime: ~60-90 minutes
🎭 Genres: Horror, Exploration, Traitor Mechanics
-
Choose a character.
- Each player selects a character card and places their matching token in the Entrance Hall.
- Adjust starting stats for Speed, Might, Sanity, and Knowledge.
-
Shuffle the decks.
- Separate the Event, Item, and Omen decks and shuffle them.
-
Prepare the game board.
- Place the Entrance Hall, Foyer, and Grand Staircase.
- Keep room tiles face down and ready to be drawn.
Each player takes turns in clockwise order, following these steps:
- Move your character based on their current Speed stat.
- Explore new rooms by drawing a room tile when moving into an unexplored area.
- Resolve room effects if required:
- Item cards provide useful tools and buffs.
- Event cards may cause stat changes, force dice rolls, or introduce story elements.
- Omen cards bring potential power-ups but also risk triggering the Haunt.
- End your turn if you drew a card (Event, Omen, or Item) or finished all actions.
Important: If you enter a room with a symbol (🔮 🏆 🎭), you must stop moving and resolve the effect before continuing.
- You may move a number of spaces up to your Speed stat.
- Moving through doors allows access to adjacent unexplored areas.
- If entering a new room:
- Draw a matching room tile (Basement, Ground Floor, or Upper Floor).
- Place it so that doors align to allow passage.
- If a card is drawn (Event, Omen, or Item), your movement ends immediately.
Special Rule: Stairs and Dumbwaiters allow movement between floors.
- Item cards provide buffs and equipment. These can be dropped, traded, or used depending on the item description.
- Omen cards grant special effects but also contribute to the Haunt roll.
Every time an Omen is drawn, the player must make a Haunt Roll!
The Haunt determines the Traitor and the Heroes, splitting the game into two opposing teams.
- When an Omen card is drawn, the player rolls 6 dice.
- If the total is lower than the number of Omens revealed, the Haunt begins!
- The game scenario is determined by the combination of:
- The last Omen drawn.
- The room it was discovered in.
Once revealed, the Haunt Book is used to determine the specific Traitor and their secret objective.
- The Traitor leaves the room and reads their Haunt instructions.
- The remaining players (Heroes) read their win condition.
- The game transforms into a battle between the two sides, each trying to complete their objective first.
