Make the Custard
In a shallow dish, whisk together
3 large eggs,
1/2 cup heavy cream (or
1/4 cup cream +
1/4 cup milk),
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar,
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract, and a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg + pinch of salt, if using.
Heat the Skillet
Preheat a skillet over medium-low heat. Add butter or butter + oil once the pan is hot.
Dip the Bread
Dip each thick slice of day-old bread into the custard for 20-30 seconds per side, ensuring full absorption without sogginess.
Cook to Perfection
Place the soaked bread in the skillet. Cook for 2-4 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through. Adjust the heat to prevent the outside from browning before the center sets.
Keep Warm (Optional)
Transfer cooked slices to a baking sheet and hold in a 180°F oven while finishing the rest.
Serve Like Royalty
Top with maple syrup, whipped cream, fresh berries, powdered sugar - or a sprinkle of sugar and a torch for a creme brulee twist.
